Windows XP Service Pack 3 is available now

At some point after noon CST on Tuesday, March 6th, Microsoft made their latest service pack for Windows XP available. Earlier that day, articles were still being written about the latest collection of bug fixes and added features being "in limbo." However, the update is now ready for download from Microsoft's Windows Update site.

Will Microsoft go on a shopping spree or is the Yahoo withdrawal a ploy?

It certainly appears that the Microsoft deal, while dead for now, has a chance of springing back to life. Although Yahoo shares dropped about 15% on the first day of trading after Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer announced that they had withdrawn their bid, the stock was still trading about $5 per share higher than when Microsoft started the courtship three months ago. Microsoft's shares dropped a little, indicating that investors want to see the software giant do something to help them believe that it is relevant going against the online search king Google.

Vista’s UAC is a good beginning

Lately I have been hearing a lot of complaints about User Account Control (UAC). It may not be perfect but it is a great feature of Windows Vista. With UAC, you will finally be able to run your machine as a standard user as opposed to a computer administrator. If you are running Windows XP, you are most likely running as a computer administrator. From a security standpoint, this can open the floodgates to spyware, malware, viruses, etc. By running your computer as an administrator, a compromise can easily write to your system files. As a standard user, access would be denied.
