LiveJournal sold to Russian firm, SUP

Six Apart, a blogging platforms company, announced the sale of LiveJournal to Russia-based media firm Single User Portal.

An excerpt from Tech Blorge:

The company behind blogging platforms such as Movable Type, TypePad and Vox, has sold the popular LiveJournal blog site to the Russian company, SUP. The new company will form LiveJournal, Inc., and open an office San Francisco to manage the global brand.

Six Apart acquired LJ in January 2005, and it will continue to help the new company with the sale of advertising for at least the next 12 months.

Six Apart has been involved with several blogging technologies that have helped make the concept more commonplace.

LiveJournal involves accounts of more than 14 million users, but the move to the Russian side means that several users have begun worrying about privacy.
