Google acquires micro-blogging service Jaiku

Google has acquired the Finnish company Jaiku, which specializes in letting users post short messages that describe their presence. The service, also called micro-blogging, is the rival of a similar service called Twitter.

A quote from the post at GoogleBlog:

“…it’s more difficult to keep track of everyone when they’re running around at warp speed. That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’ve acquired Jaiku, a company that’s been hard at work developing useful and innovative applications for staying in touch with the people you care about most — regardless of whether you’re at a computer or on a mobile phone…”, said Google Product Manager, Tony Hsieh.

There is secrecy wrapped around how Google intends to monetize this acquisition, and registration for new users has been temporarily stopped at the site.

Google’s string of acquisitions lead to speculation that it wants to be the de-facto carrier of all content digital. Whether it’s for delivering Web pages, image, voice, or video, Google wants to do all that and much more (and yes, run a fews ads as well).
